GHG

Green House Gas

Situation
The automotive industry is a major producer of greenhouse gases from production and logistics. These CO2 emissions are now monitored and regulated in a growing number of countries around the world.

Under the GHG - emissions protocol, emissions from a company are divided according to three scopes. Scope 1 emissions are those that originate directly from the company operation (such as factory smokestacks and company-owned cars). Scope 2 emissions include consumed electricity, heating and cooling. All other emissions fall under Scope 3 and include both upstream activities, such as services and products that are purchased by the company, as well as downstream activities such as the emissions caused by consumers, or disposal of the product.

Challenge
Continuous reduction in energy and material consumption to achieve a significant contribution to environmental and climate protection. Careful selection of materials alone can reduce CO2 emissions during the life cycle by 13% (Source: VDI Nachrichten, Berlin, 06.03.2011).

Solution
We handle Scope 3 upstream activities, such as services and products that are purchased by the company, as well as downstream activities, such as the emissions caused by consumers.
With our emissions accounting software, designers and developers are able to calculate the exact environmental impact of materials used, from pre-production through to recycling. This is done with the help of expansive databases.

Advantage

  • Reduced time to market
  • Cost reduction through simulation
  • Physical disassembly of prototypes
